I wanted a custom built media unit. My brother wants to be a carpenter. You could say it was meant to be.
Using sketch up, I designed a basic base unit to house three double cupboards and two end units (one open and one closed) which led into a table and was then topped with open bookshelf for DVDs and some of our many nicknacks.
My very talented brother interpreted it thus...
The shelves are held up by a ladder built from standard 22mm copper piping then fixed to the walls, base unit and ceilings. The wood was stained white and then edged with copper tape (most commonly used in the garden to shock sneaky snails).
The doors are a basic frame with white stained cladding and copper knobs from Anthropologie. The middle doors pick up the copper theme with radiator cover cladding spray painted copper (not a fun task, the spray paint goes through the holes and very little goes on the wood!)
Adding a coat of varnish gave it that final touch of magic and we couldn't be happier with the results. Yes some of the doors are a bit wonky but for a first attempt at carpentry I, for one, could not be prouder of my little bro. And all in all cost us about half the price of even an IKEA basic unit would have cost. You can't beat a bit of craftsmanship at mates rates.
